According to Memphis City Schools, "English IV is designed to prepare students to complete their formal secondary education with the skills needed to communicate effectively with others in the workplace or to gain admission to and succeed in college or professional school. Writing experiences include formal, informal, creative, and technical/functional compositions. An additional aim is to cultivate and nurture an appreciation of literature. In English IV the focus is on
British literature, with an emphasis on examining literary works within their historical and cultural contexts. Moreover, as the course of study progresses and unfolds, the outline specifically details and targets both the content and curriculum standards that are interdependent. Operating as a bridge to and through other disciplines, language arts connects standards and concepts via written and/or verbal communication across the content area to support comprehensive student learning. From that vein, it becomes a living plan of action for teachers.
From a more global aspect, this course provides support with language related career
choices and ensures that students become lifelong proficient readers and writers.
